Assistant chemical designer.

Description

Traditionally, the work of perfumists and cosmetologists has been based on sensory analysis, their knowledge of raw materials and fragrances, and their subjectivity and experience. The increase in demand, the strict standards for identification of any potential risks and the need of consumers to know the formula of the products they use, implies the need of applying the latest scientific advances to manufacturing processes. The development of instrumental analysis, mainly solid phase micro-extraction (SPME), chromatographic techniques and electronic sensors, has enabled in-depth research into the composition of perfumes and cosmetics and to determine the ones responsible for their effects. In this context, design analysts perform their function by providing support to creative professionals, carrying out the identification and quantitative assay of the components of different formulations and helping adjust the end product through interpretation of these results. The job belongs to the analytical research department which exists in the majority of perfume and cosmetics companies, and also involves performing analytical and physical, chemical and microbiological tests on samples from quality control, production or registration studies, as well as collaborating in the development and improvement of analytical methods to reduce turnaround time or increase the quality of the results.

Tasks

  • Select the laboratory equipment and instrumentation required to perform the testing.
  • Know the different official methods and standard operating procedures used in the laboratory.
  • Prepare chemical solutions for use in processing materials following standard formulas or experimental procedures.
  • Perform laboratory chemical and physical testing of the raw materials used (natural or artificial) according to standard operating instructions and procedures and analyze the data collected.
  • Use physical or chemical separation methods to isolate the active constituents of a fragrance or substance with cosmetic effects.
  • Perform routine and specialized analysis of products received by perfumists or cosmetologists using spectroscopic and chromatographics techniques, especially gas or liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Determine the stability, purity and chemical content of products, among other characteristics.
  • Maintain the laboratory documentation and records associated with the analysis of samples and tests performed and enter all data into the computer system.
  • Assay the composition of fragrances to select production standards and ensure the later work of formula adjustment and finish.
  • Review batch characteristics to ensure compliance with the formulas achieved by specialist perfumists or cosmetologists.
  • Ensure the quality of the results obtained for all samples assayed or analysed in pre-formulation stages as well as in the product finished on an industrial scale.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of instruments, optimizing the daily operation of equipment and solving any problems that may occur in their operation.
  • Work under the management of a supervisor on the improvement and validation of analytical procedures, training of other employees and the search for new instruments or methods.
