Gerontology assistant


Geriatric assistants provide care to elderly persons residing in nursing homes or users of daycare centres, helping them carry out everyday activities which they are no longer able to perform by themselves; they provide a personal care service to users and their relatives, participate in cleaning and catering duties in the establishment and contribute to preventative and stimulating activities, together with other profesisonals in the team .


  • Carry out assistance-related tasks.
    Check any incidents or symptoms which might affect users and share these with the multi-disciplinary team if need be.
    Help users get up, get dressed and undressed.
    Help users with their personal hygiene, bath routine and assistive devices (prostheses, wheelchairs, walking frames, etc.).
    Help impaired users eat and help the non-impaired do what they are unable to by themselves.
    Help users move or walk from one place to another.
    Participate in the care and prevention of issues related to excretion, incontinence and sphincter control.
    Help patients change position with the help of the nursing staff.
    Accompany patients at the end of life.
    Provide post-mortem care.
    Administer medication by oral or topical route and provide specific care services under the supervision of the healthcare staff.
    Accompany users outside of the centre when necessary.
    Look after the relatives of residents.
    Formalise the documentation and records specific to each centre.
  • Carry out cleaning and catering tasks.
    Clean the personal items of residents (toiletry items, wash basins, etc.)
    Collect dirty laundry and it organise its transportation to the laundry service.
    Help keep rooms clean and tidy.
    Monitor the accumulation of medication and food in bedrooms.
    Set the table and collect and distribute meals to impaired users, whether in the lunchroom or bedrooms.
    Serve food to residents with special requirements outside regular meal schedules.
    Help maintain and monitor stocks of materials and equipment on the different floors (diapers, underwear, etc.)
  • Help carry out preventative and stimulation activities with users.
    Boost user motivation through participation in different activities (entertainment, rehabilitation and occupational therapy).
    Boost and exercise user skills to slow their decline and promote their personal autonomy.
    Listen to users and detect any previously unidentified problems.
    Help users feel at home, in familiar settings.
    Encourage human, social and interpersonal contact between residents.
