Care technician for children in need of services

Description

Technicians specialising in care for children in need of services provide advice, support and care for children in need of services, as well as working with the framework of the prevention of childhood and youth-related social issues. In line with current legislation, they apply active measures to protect the child from the risk situation and to prevent these situations from arising, helping the child to access resources which facilitiate their total integration into society and minimise the risk of future social exclusion. Care technicians for children work as part of social welfare or public health organisations or programmes, or at children's health centres. As such, they work in collaboration with other professionals who interact with the child in need of services, whether from Government organisations or other associations related to the field.

Tasks

  • In relation to abuse, design and draw up socio-educational intervention programmes aimed at families with children in social risk situations. Help reduce the incidence of child abuse and abandonment, through early detection of and intervention in families in risk situations. Provide information and awareness about situations and factors behind abuse to the relevant authorities (social assistants, police forces, courts, etc.).
  • Design and create programmes to detect, diagnose and assess children who have been abandoned or neglected by their family.
    Study the child's situation and environment, with a particular emphasis on specific issues (marginalisation, drug addiction, delinquency) in order to propose the most suitable protective measure.
    Liaise with other child protection bodies: youth courts, the public prosecution service, and investigating courts.
    Liaise with, inform and advise the municipal social services and other organisations related to child protection.
  • Manage and take part in foster programmes and processes.
    Be familiar with the full range options regarding the award of care of a minor to a person or family.
    Liaise with other professionals involved in the fostering process. Provide information annd guidance to foster families about specific issues suffered by the child.
    Follow up on the progress of children placed in foster care.
  • Manage and participate in adoption programmes and processes.
    Be familiar with the full range options regarding the adoption of a minor by a person or family.
    Liaise with other professionals involved in adoption processes.
    Provide information and guidance to adoptive families on the specific issues suffered by children.
    Follow up on the progress of children placed in adoption.
  • Design and create intervention programmes aimed at children in care centres.
    Liaise with other professionals at the care centre, in line with the centre's care objectives.
    Together with other professionals at the centre, draw up personal intervention plans aimed at particular children, to foster their social (educational, training, labour or community) integration and prevent future risk situations.
    Draft follow-up and control reports on the situation of children in care centres.
    Advise relatives and other people in the environment on how to avoid future risk situations.
  • Be familiar with and keep up-to-date with international, European, national and autonomous community legislation governing minors.
  • Draw up, participate in or interpret studies or investigations on the situation of children in risk situations.
  • Liaise with other professionals or organisations that interact with minors in order to act proactively in risk situations.
    Participate in educational, health, care-related, information and awareness campaigns alongside other organisations that work with minors (educational centres, training and employment programmes, health-care centres, etc.).
