Computational biologist

Description

Bioinformatics is a discipline based on the use of computer tools to manage and analyse biological data. The activities of this discipline focus on three basic areas: knowledge of the information contained in the various international databases and the use of research tools; the analysis of nucleotide (material that comprises DNA) and protein sequences; and the creation of computer platforms to access the databases and process the data.

The bioinformatics engineer is responsible for collecting, analysing and interpreting biological data via the development of programmes and the creation of platforms. In general, this engineer has knowledge regarding information technology, applied mathematics, statistics and molecular biology.

Tasks

  • Develop customised algorithms, computer programmes, platforms and software to analyse data on biological molecules.
  • Work closely with molecular biologists, mathematicians, (bio)statisticians, physicists and/or engineers.
  • Integrate and use a large amount of data and knowledge from experimental studies and platforms or disciplines (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, physiology).
  • Conduct studies to verify the quality of described models by comparison among numerical simulations and experimental data.
  • Design and maintain databases.
  • Conduct searches in international databases.
  • Can collaborate in the preparation of reports using the obtained results.
  • Write scientific articles for magazines of this sector and present results at scientific conferences.
