The figure of the composer of soundtracks or musical tunes puts their creativity at the service of the audio-visual and performing arts sector (in fields such as cinematography, television, advertising agencies, companies organizing acts and record labels, among others). This professional adapts music to certain images, the complete audiovisual product or a specific act, and works in coordination with the person responsible for the product (e. g., working with the director for the soundtrack of a film). Digital technology has transformed this occupation, since it allows creating and adapting music using computer programs, deliver it on a computer-based support and use this support to be up-to-date with the latest tendencies.


  • Develop the idea of composition.
  • Construct musical composition.
  • Compile information and define the soundtrack or signature tune.
    Compile information on the subject, tone and other aspects of the audiovisual production the music is to be adapted to (from the complete soundtrack of a film to a jingle for a TV show).
    Work in conjunction with the director of production to define the soundtrack, topic or tune.
    Define the type of instruments required to play the music according to the effect to be achieved.
    Choose the format of the music: whether it will be composed of only digital elements, will have choirs, a vocalist, be a symphony, etc.
  • Coordinate the musical performance.
    Transcribe musical ideas to the computer using knowledge of composition and following the standards for harmony, rhythm, tonal melody and structure.
    Direct the musical performance together with experts in computer-based music.
    Adapt the music for the orchestra or band in different musical styles.
  • Develop the sequence of the music in relation to the whole performance.
    Determine the voice, instruments, tempo and rhythm to highlight the importance of the audiovisual production, the spot or the performance.
    Divide the composition for individual performers.
    Determine where each part of the composition has to appear in relation to the final audiovisual product.
  • Collaborates in post-production.
    Collaborate with the director of audiovisual production, the spot or performance and with the director of the post-production editing.
    Use digital tools to create the arrangements and put them together.
