Description

Composers are in charge of creating musical pieces of different types, such as soundtracks, musical tunes, scores, etc. Develop their creativity at the service of performing arts (concerts, theatre, dance), the audiovisual sector (in areas such as film, television, advertising agencies, event companies and record companies, among others).

They are responsible for every sound element (either electronic or instrumental) that configures their work. Composing requires traditional knowledge such as harmony, counterpoint or instrumentation, and more recent knowledge of new techniques and software for sounds generation and processing.

In addition, these professionals adapt their musical creation to specific requirements depending on the nature of the project: certain images, the total of an audiovisual product or in a specific event. In order to achieve a good result, they will have to coordinate with the person in charge of this commission (for example: if they create the soundtrack for a film, they will work with the direction).

Tasks

  • Develop the idea of composition by compiling information on the subject, tone and other aspects of the project and define the composition to be realized.
  • Define the type of instruments required to play the music according to the effect to be achieved.
    Choose the format of the music: whether it will be composed of only digital elements, will have choirs, a vocalist, be a symphony, etc.
    Work in conjunction with the director of production to define the composition.
  • Construct musical composition and coordinate the musical performance
    Transcribe musical ideas using knowledge of composition and following the standards for harmony, rhythm, tonal melody and structure.
    Adapt the music for the orchestra or band in different musical styles.
    Divide the composition for individual performers.
  • In case they have to add the music to an audiovisual production (the complete soundtrack of a film or videogame, a jingle for a TV show, etc.) determine where each part of the composition has to appear in relation to the final audiovisual product (sequence editing).
    Determine the voice, instruments, tempo and rhythm to highlight the importance of the audiovisual production, the spot or the performance.
  • Collaborate in post-production and its integration in the final product.
    Use digital tools to create the arrangements and put them together.
