Cashiers

Cashiers are responsible for collecting for all the products clients buy. They may pay using cash (where change may need to be returned), debit / credit cards, gift cards, foreign currency or electronic money, primarily. People who hold this job must know how to handle each payment method according to total quality standards, trying to assure total customer satisfaction of the clients both in speed and effectiveness. Cashiers also do customer service and advise clients, as well as restocking products on shop shelves. While cashiers at supermarkets and other smaller shops tend to combine work at the till with other tasks (placement of shelves, removing boxes of unsold product, etc.), hypermarket cashiers normally work exclusively at the cash register. They usually report to the shop manager or department manager.

• Do the daily physical opening (or for the shift) of the till. Must count the amount of cash when starting work and log the data to be able to close the till at the end of the workday.
• Collect for services and/or products, either using the terminals (PoS scanning) that the company makes available or with manual means (recording tills).
• Make collections by doing the administrative tasks required for each case, i.e. cash, credit cardsetc.
• Give customers change as necessary.
• Package the products sold, as necessary.
• Advise and inform clients who request information.
• Provide sales literature to clients.
• Remove the anti-theft alarms from products that thus require it.
• Close out the shop till each day (or each shift) leaving the proper amount of cash and cash up. This involves counting the money and logging the data. The difference between the amount at the end of the workday and the amount at the beginning of the day must match the list of sold items.
• In smaller establishments, also restock products and attach price tags to products.

• Work hours

  There is a wide range of possible schedules for this occupation, as opening hours largely depend on where the shops are located (shopping centres, city centres or in the suburbs) and also on the type of establishment (street shop, market stall, etc.). The opening hours of retail shops are regulated by the Retail Business Hours Act, which establishes opening and closing times of businesses, as well as the public holidays on which they may open. The usual working hours of 40 hours a week can be done in intensive shifts (in the morning or afternoon) or split-shifts (morning and afternoon with a break at lunchtime). A lot of business is done on Fridays and Saturdays at this type of shops.

  Salary range: between 15.025 and 19.966 euros annum gross. Median: 17.321 euros annum gross.
