Description

Advise client companies on the strategy for launching internet-related businss models and subsequently apply them bearing in mind the nature of the company and the sector in which it operates. E-business consultants should have a broad range of knowledge: on one hand it, they should have a command of information and communication technologies and, on the other, they should be able to coordinate companies in order to apply the most suitable technological solutions depending on the business's strategic needs. This role may be more or less technical depending on the type of solution to be implemented. Thus, e-business consultants must analyse the client company's value chain, which starts with procurement, passing through production and, finally, sales, to decide in which areas the chosen technology system should be applied.

When a company decides to adopt an e-business solution, the aim of this is to make its business processes (such as, for example, procurement, sales or customer service) more productive, through the use of the internet. Taking into account these demands, the consultant are responsible for addressing clients' enquiries as to how, when and where it should boost its online business. It is worth pointing out that e-commerce, involving the completion of purchase and sale transactions over the internet, is considered an integrated e-business solution.

Tasks

E-business does not only involve the online sale of products to end consumers (B2C), but also includes the online channelling of information flows between businesses (B2B), as well as the management of knowledge. In this sense, the tasks performed by e-business consultants can vary substantially depending on how complex the solution to be implemented is:
  • Advise the company on the strategy it should undertake.
Help analyse the company's position in the market and within its sector.
Analyse the client company's requirements and advise it on possible risks.
Assess the company's weak points and its strategic strengths so as to be able to optimise these.
Define the strategic environment on which to base the e-business project and the company's future targets.
Coordinate the internal resources and, where necessary, determine the necessary technical mechanisms for the passage of information between the company and future partners (for example, introducing a payment gateway).
Define the most suitable online business model for the company.
  • Coordinate and supervise the application of technology solutions.
Develop the architecture for the information models to be applied, as well as the security levels.
Gradually implement the e-business system, which is usually split into four stages:
    1. Building a basic website.
    2. Building a website on which basic commercial transactions can be performed.
    3. The integration of information processes amongst employees, suppliers and clients.
    4. Total automation of the business management system.
  • Perform overall tests and specific process integration tests.
Implement the training plan for employees who are to work in the new environment.
Measure the general results of and monitor the system.
Consider new business opportunities, bearing in mind the e-business solutions implemented.
