The professional that usually has double responsibility, as a director and as a teacher in a pre-school, primary or secondary education centre, vocational training, art and design, conservation and restoration of cultural property, physical education, adult training or languages.
As director, they are the person in charge of managing the educational institution so that it is efficient. This means promoting team work and collaboration among staff, taking into account the expectations of the students and parents, and planning for the future and application of administrative aspects such as contracting or introducing staff, building construction and applications for supplies.
Tasks
The tasks carried out by the director of an educational centre are summed up below:
Plan, coordinate, direct and control the academic and administrative activities of the centre.
Control, assess and approve special activities, complementary, recreational, sport and cultural programs.
Evaluate the work of the teaching staff.
Organise and approve the timescale of activities during the school year.
Draft and implement the proposed budget for the centre and authorise expenses. Be indirectly responsible for signing cheques, store materials and implement the budget.
Ensure compliance with the standards, procedures and regulations governing the centre.
Head the school council and other acts, and supervise and distribute activities among the staff.
Manage documentation of the centre, regularly report to the Department of education and receive information on activities and regulations issued by this organisation.
Draw up and control the statistics.
Organise academic recycling workshops for the teaching staff and participate in them.
Supervise and control all records regarding acts, matriculations, attendance of teaching staff, among others.
Promote actions leading to results-based improvements in the teaching process.
Supervise the implementation of plans and programmes that guarantee all-inclusive attention to the student body.
Draft the annual results report for the activities taking place in the centre.
Participate in the Parents Association council meetings.
Make appropriate decisions based on specific education policies.
Maintain relationships with public authorities with the aim of supporting and obtaining cooperation with the work of the centre. This requires negotiation skills.
The director of an educational centre must comply with all requirements to be a teacher in the centre where he/she works, have a university degree equivalent and the official master's degree to be a director.

Complementary training
For the exercise of this job it is advisable to be at willingness of the Master's Degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary Education and High School, Vocational Training and Language Teaching.
The director of an educational centre must have completed one or more of the following courses: Course on knowledge of the law of education and its regulations, programmes and official standards, administrative procedures of the Department of Education and education policies. Course on management of human resources. Course on project management.

Advanced-user level IT skills: Office, Open Office, Internet browsers and Outlook.
Knowledge of virtual training or e-learning platforms, for example, Moodle. Knowledge of Catalan, and Aranés in the Val d'Aran, accredited by the level C or equivalent certification.
Working as a director of a private educational centre requires between 1 and 3 years experience in similar positions in other educational centres. Working as a director of an educational centre requires passing a merit-based entry exam called by the Catalan Department of Education. Taking part in this merit-based entry exam requires being a career civil servant teacher, giving classes in the center they want to be assigned to, and meeting the following requirements: Be working in a public educational centre of the Department of Education giving classes in the subjects thjay want to be assigned to, and have worked for at least one complete academic course at the time of publication of the call. Present a directorial project that includes, among others, the objectives and an action plan and its evaluation. It is important to be approved by the teaching staff of the center they want to be the director. Have at least five-years service as a professional civil servant in the education department. Have given direct teaching in the classroom as a career civil servant, during a period of identical duration, in some of the subjects offered by the centres selected as a destination. In addition, there must be a vacant position for their specialty on the staff of the centres they want to be assigned to and which they can access as holder of the position, or due to training, extraordinary or special skills of the teacher candidate for director.

The following measures affecting directors of educational centres are important: more independence and more resources. The director is a key element in managing this new situation. Centres will remain open from 1 September until 30 June, therefore directors must manage this new situation. New professional profiles will be created in education, expanding the range of possibilities to work in schools. More life-long learning will be required and so the director should encourage opgoing recycling and training of staff. Occupational health and certification of payment conditions. The director must pay attention to these two aspects. More resources for centres with students in disadvantaged situations. The directors of these centres receive greater support.
