Digital Technical Director

Description

Technical directors - digital processes oversee the production of all digital processes that are to be included in the scenes of a film or other audiovisual product. As such, they can be considered to be involved in all of the phases of a production. Their main role is to develop technical and visual solutions for sequences which they submit for approval by the special effects supervisor or the digital production engineer. These solutions refer to digitally created movements, geometries, perspectives and the way in which objects and scenes are seen on screen, among others. These professionals are also involved in the initial design of paints, effects or compositions that will later be produced by artists and technicians. They offer advance solutions to possible problems that may arise during their creation or integration. They also oversee the work of both digital process artists and of the technical assistants who help to integrate these into the final product.

Tasks

  • Participate in the pre-production process.
Together with the pre-production team, decide what computer programmes will be used to develop the techniques and specific tools required in a digital audiovisual production.
  • Oversee the digital creation process.
Plan and create the movements, geometry and view of the objects and of computer-generated scenes that are to be integrated into the final audiovisual product.
Design and create paints, effects and even programmes for the composition of digital sequences.
Design and create geometries, lighting, objects and virtual sets.
Collaborate with the art department on the construction of elements and characters for animation.
  • Integrate digital processes in the final product.
Determine solutions to be carried out for each shot and oversee the rotoscope artists and their assistants.
Monitor the texture and colour of objects, the technical aspects of special effects and simulations. They also review the final images.
Together with the director of photography, oversee the definitive integration of the scenes, sequences or digital objects in the final product, ensuring that they have the right textures, proportions and colours.
  • Supervise the work of the digital production team.
Monitor the output of the production team (artists and technicians) on a day-to-day basis, in order to ensure that the initial plans are being met.
