Description

A DJ selects and plays pre-recorded music for different kinds of audiences. Professional DJs do far more than just play music; they also mix music, creating rhythms and a pleasant atmosphere suited to the audience of the event according to its musical preferences and the kind of venue (a club, private function, the radio). DJs can use several music formats such as a vinyl, CDs or digital, and a wide variety of equipment, such as record player, mixers, microphones and amplifiers. With some specific jobs (holiday entertainment or on the radio), DJs, in addition to selecting music, must also maintain a flowing and pleasant conversation with participants to boost the atmosphere of the event.

Tasks

  • Choose, play and mix music in clubs and bars.
  • Choose suitable music in line with the tastes of the audience and the musical policy of the venue.
  • Devise visual and lighting effects which match the pace of the music.
  • Create his/her own sounds, manipulating rhythms, using song samples, adding effects, etc.
  • Use all the music and mixing equipment.
  • Discuss script soundtracks or playlists for forthcoming shows.
  • Work with the video jockey to choose the music to be played during the session.
