Critical care nurse

Description

Nurses of the critically ill work in the services of intensive care and accident and emergency, taking care of people that are in a critical state. They must assess the needs of the sick person and give them the appropriate nursing treatments. Reason and critical judgement is applied to adapt treatments and manage resources, taking into account the advances in health science and new technologies.

A nurse of the critically ill works as a member of an interdisciplinary team formed by different health professionals. His/her contribution guarantees the continuity of the patient's treatments. The contribution of this Nursing professional is essential to quality improvement in attention to critically-ill patients and their families.

Tasks

  • Identify imbalances in the needs of patients (breathing, hemodynamics, level of consciousness, nutrition, among others) and provide them with the appropiate treatment to meet these needs.
    Promote a healthy and secure working environment, taking into account the situation of the patient.
  • Manage and distribute resources (material, time, etc.) and establish work methods for the correct application of nursing treatments.
    Participate in prioritisation decision making in therapeutic measures to be employed, and in the development of protocols and procedures.
  • Find out the pathophysiology of the predominant pathologies of patients admitted to accident and emergency and those admitted to intensive care units (respiratory, heart, neurological, digestive, obstetrical, toxicological, etc.) and apply diagnostic techniques and suitable therapeutic measures to every situation.
  • Understand and make use of monitoring and instrumentation systems, as well as general and specific treatment principles in the field of critical illness.
  • Understand the use of medicines in ICU (Intensive Care Unit), and Accident and Emergency (sedatives, painkillers, substances vasoactivas, etc.) and their clinical applications. Manage medicines and provide treatments derived from their application.
  • If necessary, apply advanced life support techniques - ventilatory and circulatory, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation and cares post-resuscitation.
  • Identify and prevent complications that can be occur in ICU, maintaining suitable conditions for a subsequent recovery. Complications can include:
    The impact of anaesthetic plans in critical patients, applying post-operational treatments to surgical patients.
    Infections that can be acquired in the ICU, correctly evaluating patients that acquire them.
    Further potential complications include sores, muscular problems, etc.
  • Identify bioethical problems and apply the critical logic and judgement required for their analysis and resolution.
  • Give support to relatives, providing information, company and education suited to the situation of the patient and his or her surroundings. In the event of terminal illness, accompany the patient in the process of dying with dignity.
  • Carry out research projects in his field of expertise.
