Description

These professionals communicate information using computer information graphics. If in traditional, paper journalism, information graphic artists expressed written information through graphic elements in order to reinforce the message through drawings, tables, maps, etc., in digital formats, there is the matter of interactivity with readers, which totally determines the work of this professional. Thus, information graphic professionals who work online must think extremely differently to those who work for television or the printed press. The internet offers interactivity, videos, audio and music, images, etc. Furthermore, online "reading" is not linear, each digital information graphic opens up several possible methods of reading, with different people viewing different information depending on their interests.

Tasks

  • Search for, analyse and synthesise information. Analyse the information they have to turn into a graphic element and consider the different graphic options in order to communicate the information as clearly as possible. Where the project requires specific documentation to be searched for, or personal interviews, take care of these. When submitting pitches, they must take account of how important the information is, how new it is journalistically speaking, whether or not it will be accompanied by text and, together with the art director or information graphics manager, the specific role of the graphic element in the layout of the news article.
  • They must consider users' possible interest areas and the possibilities for interactivity offered by the information and, where required, search for the necessary information.
  • Design various graphic options for each piece of information.
  • Draw up graphic proposals to complement or substitute the article text. To achieve this, make use of iconographic and typographic resources.
  • Once the graphic idea has been approved, produce the final design to be inserted onto the website.
