Description

The dining monitor is the professional who works in schools and provides support to the educational functions in the dining room and in the leisure spaces.
He or she develops specific functions that are different according to the school and the age of pupils. This functions can be classified into three types: those related to the support and education in eating habits, such as encouraging children's autonomy in dinner time; those associated to the support to dining room maintenance, ensuring, for example, that children have the necessary tools (plates, cups, cutlery, etc.); and those related to revitalizing leisure spaces, for example, promoting participation in team games.
The dinning monitor may work in childhood, primary and secondary schools. In many cases they are hired by a company that provides services to the childhood, primary and secondary schools, but they can also be hired by the AMPA (Association of students' parents).

Tasks

The main tasks carried out by the dinning monitor are:
  • To support and educate in eating habits: to promote autonomy for children to eat and help them acquire good habits; to teach the correct behavior in table and with classmates and dining room professionals; and to promote hygienic practices before and after eating, such as hands and teeth washing.
  • To support the access to and maintenance of the dining room: to ensure compliance schedules fixed by the school to go in and out of the dining room; to keep order during the access of children to the dining room; to make sure the dining room has the necessary tools (jars, plates, silverware, napkins, etc.); and to maintain and clean the dining room, ensuring it is in the necessary hygiene conditions for the next day.
  • To revitalize leisure spaces: to provide support to the planning of leisure activities, and to prepare and energize games according to the school guidelines.
The dining and leisure monitor is also responsible for giving support to the management of conflicts that may arise between students during dining or leisure time, and to assist in the evaluation of dining and leisure activities, for which they may have to elaborate reports.
