This is the professional who works on the processing and hygiene of hair and scalp. Command of all hairdressing specialities undertaken in a hairdressers: cuts, hairstyles, perms, colouring, dyes and hairpieces. In addition, this professional carries out complementary techniques of manicure, pedicure and beard grooming. This is one of the professional categories in hairdressing, above that of auxiliary and assistant, and under higher qualified hairdressers or salon managers.


  • Build a close rapport with the customer, finding out about his/her preferences and advising him/her on the most flattering style, in line with his/her look and personality.
  • Apply the necessary washing and conditioning techniques. Where necessary, check the condition of the hair and scalp to identify potential problems and apply a suitable aesthetic treatment: different types of creams, shampoos and other hair products.
  • Partially or totally change the colour of the hair, dyeing it with or without bleaching. Blend the products and chemicals required to achieve the desired result. Apply these products in the appropriate manner, depending on whether these are dyes, highlights, tints, etc.
  • Cut the hair according to the selected style and using the technique best suited to each case. In the case of men, also trim and shave the beard and moustache.
  • Either temporarily or permanently change the shape of the hair, styling and putting it up according to the desired style, current fashion trends and hair type, length and shape).
  • Apply permanent wave, shaping and straightening techniques, using various kinds of tools and systems
  • Apply hair extensions according to the wishes of the customers and based on the diagnosis and style.
  • Apply different types of hair extensions depending on customer requirements and the type, shape and and colour of the hair.
  • Teach trainees and assistants in his/her capacity of more senior worker.
  • Apply manicure and pedicure techniques as an added-value service to hairdressing. Also eyebrow and upper lip hair removal, or social make-up services.
  • At the end of the service, charge the client for any work carried out and occasionally recommend products suited to his/her needs.
In the case of business owners (which is often the case), these are in charge of the administration and financial management of the establishment:
  • Establish the range of services provided by the hairdressing salon, defining the pricing policy and promotions to be offered.
  • Hire and train hairdressing staff and organise and supervise their work.
  • Keep stock of cosmetic products and supplies, furniture and machinery, issuing the relevant purchase orders to replace or refurbish these when needed.
  • Implement the necessary measures to meet establishment health and safety standards, checking that work equipment is cleaned, checked and sterilised.
