Transportation operator

Description

The traffic operator is a person with a technical background who organises and manages the means of transport in a transportation or logistics company to ensure the fulfilment of the loading plan and that customer orders are completed. Usually operates under the guidance of the transport or traffic management to whom s/he reports. Operate in direct contact with the drivers who carry out transportation tasks, whether from the company itself or outsourced from external companies . The transportation of goods by road is subject to regulations and specific legal and administrative requirements, the fulfilment of which by the means of transport of the company falls under the responsibility of the traffic operator.

Tasks

  • Coordinate customer loading needs and the means of transportation offered by the company (whether subcontracted or not). Draw up the transportation operating schedule (usually by lorry) for the pick-up, loading and transport to the final destination, and the goods delivery report for the client company.
  • Manage the availability of vehicles (own) or carriers (sub-contracted) for the shipment of products and orders, in accordance with approved suppliers and established procedures.
  • Take shipping orders from the customers assigned to him and assign the relevant transportation to said customers.
  • Take into consideration preestablished supply or distribution routes and adjust these if need be.
  • Prepare shipping orders, sharing the relevant communications with the carrier and dispatch area (which can be in the company itself or external). This work includes the specification of the place and time of delivery at destination.
  • Check product and shipping order departures and arrivals (shipment follow-up). Keep records of the above.
  • May be in charge of preparing vehicle itineraries, unless this task is assigned to another person from the company team or the carrier.
  • Keep control of transportation supplier invoices.
  • Check that both vehicles and drivers (or carriers, if applicable) fulfil transportation requirements and are in possession of the relevant administrative documentation.
  • Keep control of the management ratios, levels of service and quality indicators of the transportation company, whether own or subcontracted.
  • Present management reports according to the quality ratios and service levels established by the company and report to the relevant person in charge.
