The professional working in the secondary education centers who is responsible for guiding the teaching and learning process of students, which means giving classes, applying specific teaching methods, assessing and certifying the knowledge obtained by the student body and, in the majority of cases, giving tutorials or ensuring personalized follow-up of each student. Students are usually between 13 and 20 years of age. Classes can be given to secondary education, college students or Professional Training Courses.


The tasks carried out by a secondary school teacher are summarised below:
  • Give the whole student body the core skills of the subject matter taught.
  • Ensure personal development of the student body.
  • Coordinate with other teachers of the same student body to elaborate and adapt the curriculum to their needs and characteristics.
  • Generally follow-up the student body and establish any actions required to improve the learning process in accordance with the educational project of the centre.
  • Evaluate the student body in accordance with the established regulations and the educational project of the centre, and adopt the corresponding decisions regarding promotion.
  • Perform any other function established by the Department of Education or stipulated in the orientation plan and tutorial action of the centre.
  • Prevent any learning problems that may arise and share all necessary information to work in coordination with other teachers.
  • Act as tutor for a group of students and help them achieve better personal growth and social and professional inclusion.
  • Maintain a relationship with the families or legal guardians of the students, through tutorships or meetings, and follow-up both the learning process and aspects of personal development, educational guidance, coexistence and cooperation among students.
