Multimedia journalist; Multi-skilled journalist

Description

The term multi-format journalist is used to refer to those media professionals who, all the while respecting ethical precepts and legal regulations, search for, compile, process, draw up, present, disseminate and/or manage news about various subjects and in different formats. Unlike traditional writers, these figures always have various tasks on the go at any one time. Until recently, in the vast majority of cases these tasks used to be carried out by other professionals whose positions are currently disappearing. Multi-format journalists work in the printed press, radio, television, at agencies, press offices and for online newspapers. They may also be self-employed (freelance). As such, the multiple formats in which these journalists work may include: different media (when they work in various media or platforms), different subject areas (where they deal with content in various sections or areas) and different technology (when it requires the use of tools employed in different phases of news production).

Tasks

The specific tasks of this occupation are summarised in the following list:
  • Detect the news potential of recent developments and find out which genres, formats, channels and media are most appropriate for each type of information.
  • Properly document your work, so as to develop subsequent work and directly obtain the data necessary for the information (via direct observation, interviews, etc.).
  • Prioritise, organise and structure the material obtained.
  • Present and disseminate information in a correct, clear and attractive way and carry out a timely follow-up of the results of this journalistic work, via follow-up articles (other pieces that complement or enrich the topic), as well as via the management of suggestions, comments or contributions from the public.
