Description

Online journalists are professionals who search for, draw up, disseminate and manage news for companies who operate online, whether digital versions of conventional formats (television, radio, printed press...) or "original" online media, i.e. content created specially for online use. These figures are normally required to adapt the data they have collected to the nature and specific features of the relevant platform. Thus, the journalism they carry out, all the while respecting ethical precepts and legal regulations, is multimedia in nature (featuring text, audio, still images and video, etc.) and the content they produce includes links which can incorporate comments and other types of interactivity. Online journalists may be employed by a company or work freelance, although the latter option is not very common As for topics and subject areas, they may be assigned a fixed section or be more flexible.

Tasks

  • Detect the news potential of recent developments, decide which genres and formats are most appropriate for each type of online information and select the resources and components they require (text, sound, photography, videos, information graphics, etc.).
  • Properly document your work, so as to develop subsequent work and directly obtain the data necessary for the information, preferably going beyond the material available online, for example through direct observation and interviews.
  • Prioritise and organise the data obtained, bearing in mind the specific features of the internet.
  • Present and disseminate information in a correct, clear and attractive way and carry out a timely follow-up of the results of this journalistic work, both via follow-up articles (other pieces that complement the topic in question), as well as via the management of comments or other contributions from the public.
