Description

Cultural planners are responsible for organising the offer of cultural and artistic activities in their area of competence (sectoral and/or territorial). They work at organisations such as local public administrations, art centres, theatres, etc. At small cultural facilities, cultural planners may also be committed to other functions, full-time. Conversely, at large organisations, like large auditoriums, they more often specialise in just one area, such as merchandising, public relations or education.

Tasks

  • Design and plan the use of the teams with respect to the activity (professional, amateur) and knowledge of possible users (linked to the amateur exhibition or creation, entities from other fields, companies, government institutions).
  • Create the programming by selecting the shows that will be part of it, which entails knowledge of the target audience, the offer of events that fit this public, attend specialised conferences, belong to specialised networks, etc.
  • Communicate and work with local performing arts organisations. Establish collaboration processes (usually via agreements) with local performing arts entities to decide on participation-exhibition at facilities, design a joint training offer for the town, realisation of amateur theatre shows
  • Manage financial issues. Draw up the annual budget for the performing arts activity that was programmed, taking current expenses into account, especially, those connected to the function (performance fees, technical data sheet).
  • Manage communications. Consider programming for different specialities (theatre, dance, music), posters, press appearances, radio, etc., based on the edition and distribution of the annual agenda.
  • Manage marketing and ticket sales. Promote events, pricing policy, routes and platforms for selling tickets (box office, Internet).
  • Manage security of the space. Manage safety and risk prevention systems, as well as the providers of these services.
  • Manage the space's catering or bar service: this area includes tasks such as looking for and negotiating with a concessionary company for bar and/or catering service, drawing up the agreement/contract that regulates the relations and services to be provided.
  • Finally, it merits mention that the tasks typical of a cultural planner may be shared with other team members, depending on the level of specialisation, volume of activity and budget of the facilities.
