An early childhood education specialist is the education professional who plans and assesses educational processes and childcare for children aged 0 to 6. An early childhood education specialist works in state or private nursery and early childhood education schools and is a key figure in children's learning and development.

The Education Act 2/2006, of 3 May, states that children aged from 0 to 6 are included in the schooling process although it is not compulsory for them to attend school. The fact that early childhood education is included in the schooling process has forced schools to adapt to the new regulations and hire the qualified professionals they need to do so. These professionals have to be sufficiently trained to perform their assigned duties which means they need specific training as an early childhood education specialist.

The adaptation of schools to the regulations has triggered demand for professionals with the skills required to work in early childhood education schools. This is an excellent opportunity to find a job in an area that lies halfway between community services and education.


The main duties of an early childhood education specialist are as follows:
  • Plan and assess educational processes and childcare.
  • Draw up, develop and assess activities designed to create habits that foster independence.
  • Meet basic childcare needs.
  • Draw up, develop and assess formal and informal education plans.
  • Use play methods to foster creativity, initiative, discipline and good relations between children.
  • Devise activities to develop children's spoken communication.
  • Stimulate and encourage groups of children through play and study.
  • Draw up children's assessment reports and give them to parents.
  • Coordinate with other school staff to achieve education plan objectives.
  • Identify children's potential nutritional, personal and family shortcomings and take action as stipulated by regulations.
  • Handle requests from children bearing in mind their parents' instructions.
  • Use their healthcare knowledge to look after children in case of illness.
