Description

Precision agriculture technicians may use tools such as GIS (Geographic information Systems), GPS (Global positioning Systems) and electronic satellite imagery to develop applications and make useful decisions in relation to agriculture. These include, for example, knowing the right time and the right amount of inputs to use in farming practices. Together, these applications are known as Precision Agriculture (Integrated Crop Management System).

Tasks

  • Develop applications with the help of information technologies (GIS, GPS, etc.) or other sources of information that provide data that can help control the variables that affect agriculture (climatic conditions, water available, weeds, state of the harvest, the amount of nutrients in the soil, soil humidity levels, etc.).
  • Create devices for agricultural machinery (tractors, pickers, etc.) which make it possible to control different variables (tractor capacity, manure ditribution, etc.) that can be optimised in order to gain an advantage, whether economic (improve output, reduce spending on phytosanitary products, etc.) or environmental (for example, not using phytosanitary techniques or manure unnecessarily and avoiding excessive use thereof, which has an impact on the environment).
  • Obtain data and produce maps to interpret this information.
  • Interpret data information and work with them so that they can be an useful instrument in decision making.
  • Perform field testing and contrast variables.
  • Answer farmers' queries and make decisions on the basis of the data produced using these tools.
