Audiovisual Translator

Description

Subtitle translators-editors have excellent knowledge of languages, which make it possible for them to interpret a work for someone who does not know the original language in which it was made. To do so, they translate and edit the text on a subtitle display for all types of audiovisual materials and occasionally for stage performances (opera, theatre...) that are performed in their original language. They must be fluent both in the the source language (the original version) and the target language (the subtitles). Likewise, they must be fully aware of the cultural, linguistic, social and historic context in which the work or audiovisual material is framed in order to interpret them correctly and be able to make them reach viewers with the same intention with which they were designed.

Tasks

  • Carefully document and study the context of the work or audiovisual material that is the object of the translation, to know and understand it perfectly.
  • View the work or audiovisual material several times to interpret it correctly.
  • Do the translation and timing of the work using a video or audio recording and specific software to enter the sentences so that they are synchronised with the original audio or video.
  • View the work or material with the subtitles to ensure that it is not oversaturated with letters and that the subtitles can be followed correctly.
  • For live shows and by using a programme, project the subtitles adapting them to real time, with possible changes or improvisations that may be needed.
