The purchasing technician advises the purchasing director, supplier development manager and buyers on technological and economic aspects of purchase management. This professional should have transversal skills given that on the one hand, he has to assess which technological components should be introduced into the department to optimise purchasing processes and on the other hand, have the ability to identify the business opportunities the market generates. It is worth mentioning that purchasing represents a major cost for companies, not only in terms of the acquisition of strategic products (those destined to production), but also non-strategic ones (paper, pens, office equipment,...). Reports to the Purchasing Director.


  • Manage purchases and supplies.
Assess existing stock quantities and determine optimum amounts in accordance with the production strategy of the company.

Analyse strategic outsourcing needs (externalisation).

Analyse which technologies (EDI, e-sourcing, ERP,...) can optimise purchasing processes and share any findings with the Purchasing Director.
  • Select, control and assess suppliers.
Assess whether the technical and quality specifications applied to company products and goods are fulfilled.

Research alternative material and product purchases

Negotiate delivery times and conditions with suppliers.
  • Negotiate purchasing prices and conditions.
Study and analyse the technical and technological aspects and components of the goods and products which form the object of the purchasing operation.

Research how to decrease internal costs in the purchasing process.

Analyse the overall costs of purchases.

Research and apply techniques to decrease the amounts paid to suppliers.

Use negotiation techniques to solve conflicts.

Carry out studies to determine the need to introduce new technology integration solutions with the supplier.
  • Apply JIT (Just In Time), policies, which involve producing with minimum stocks.
