Description

The profession of consignee/ship agent is very old and logically linked to the history and evolution of international maritime traffic. When the shipowner (owner of the ship) and the ship's captain require the assistance and support of someone of trust and knowledge of the port who is capable of ensuring that the loading and unloading of the ship can be carried out quickly and efficiently, it appears.

The profile of the ship's agent is that of a person who takes care of the ship's needs during its stay in port, especially in relation to all administrative and documentary procedures. The ship's agent works within the ship's agent companies, which are independent intermediaries that act on behalf of the owner of a ship, either shipowner (operating their own or third-party ships) or operator (with their own ships), carrying out the necessary procedures in the port to achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness in the loading and unloading of goods. Whether delivery and loading or reception and unloading, they take care of all the administrative formalities associated with the goods. Under the direction of the head of operations, the consignee or agent must ensure that the entry, stay and departure of the ship, are as fast and efficient as possible, always defending the interests of the owner and / or company that has hired their professional services.

The ship's agent must physically travel to the port to deliver the documentation (customs, health, supplies, currency, etc.) to the ship's captain. Therefore, this documentation must have been generated before the ship arrives. The type of documentation to be prepared may vary considerably depending on the services required by the ship's crew (embarking and disembarking, management of residence documents, passports, visas, etc.) and the invoices to be prepared for the ship's stay in the port (collection of fees for waste, consumption of basic services such as water, tax paid to the Port Authority for the persons carrying the ship, among others).
In short, the consignee companies basically deal with the management of administrative and legal issues by acting as the representative of the shipping company so that it can enter the port and do its work.

Tasks

- Organize and handle the dispatch of the ship's documents, which is known as clearance consisting of the verification by the maritime authority that the ship complies with all the legal requirements for navigation and traffic that it intends to perform.

- Organize and coordinate all the necessary services according to the type of operation and movements that the ship is planning: pilots, deckhands, tugboats, dockers, authorities, immigration, inspectors, etc.
Supervise and coordinate the loading and/or unloading operations of the ship with the terminals and/or longshoremen in order to make them as fast and efficient as possible.

- Attend to and coordinate all the services and supplies required by the captain and/or owner of the ship: supplies, medical services, transfers, repairs, visas, etc.

- Keep the owner or operator of the ship promptly informed about the situation and conditions of the port and the operation of the ship before and during the entire stay of the ship, until its departure.

- Prepare and send all technical reports and details of expenses and incidents during the vessel's call.
