Technician specialised in the treatment of eating disorders

Description

Nutritional habit therapists carry out medical-social services support tasks for the benefit of persons (and their relatives) suffering from eating disorders and promote educational activities aimed at the prevention of these disorders, teaching good eating behaviour and habits to persons and the community.

Tasks

  • Draw up epidemiological reports on the extent of eating disorders (type of illness, main groups affected, symptomatology, etc.), using social, qualitative and quantitative research techniques.
  • Draw up an inventory of all social welfare and healthcare resources available locally to fight eating disorders.
  • Devise and programme eating disorder related illness awareness and prevention campaigns, as well as campaigns to promote healthy eating habits.
  • Refer persons suffering from an eating disorder to the appropriate social-healthcare resources.
  • Give advice to the relatives of eating disorder sufferers to agree on potential measures and actions to be taken in order to straighten out said behaviours and move towards healthier, more nutritionally appropriate eating standards.
  • Provide a consultancy service to public opinion leaders, the media and other political and social bodies regarding the extent of disorders related to eating behaviour, in order to coordinate efforts and measures to fight this issue.
  • Train persons who suffer from an eating disorder on good nutritional habits and behaviour (eating habits, nutrition, planning meals and menus), providing information regarding the dietary-nutritional characteristics of the foods and promoting a positive self- and body-image.
  • Design, programme and teach educational training activities to fight eating disorder associated illnesses and prepare specially adapted teaching support materials according to the characteristics of the group.
  • Devise and implement awareness raising activities with public opinion leaders to educate them on the extent of eating disorders and on ways to tackle these.
  • Act as a facilitator in the frame of group therapy sessions and treatments in the fight against diseases associated with eating disorders.
