Household worker


Family workers exercise their profession in the social and health area and take part in an interdisciplinary team. They are responsible for providing the required care, considering the family and the patients' environments. They work both at home level and at a group level with different groups that need support, to a greater or lesser degree, in order to carry out activities of daily living (ADL).

These professionals' intervention has been increasing over time, targeting broader sectors of the population and reaching preventive, educational, healthcare and socializing functions. One of the areas where this professional is most needed is home care, specifically attention to people with dependence (whether temporary or permanent).


Family workers identify and respond to the personal, family and social needs of the people assisted. Specifically:
  • Monitor the eating habits
    Assist those patients who so require with the intake of food.
    Plan menus and prepare meals according to in line with the health and nutrition requirements laid out by the specialist.
    Ensure there is food in the house, replacing items if necessary.
  • Ensures personal hygiene and household cleanliness
    Check that there are hygiene products in the house, replacing items if necessary.
    Keep the patient's clothing and shoes clean and in good condition.
    Carefully wash and assist disabled patients, in line with their physical needs.
    Keep those rooms directly used by the patient clean and tidy so as to create a pleasant environment in the home.
  • Tend to the emotional, physical and social needs
    Help patients to move around and look after their physical and personal health, offering them comprehensive care. Facilitate patients' integration in the social community so as to be able to continue to develop their physical and mental faculties. Adapt social support material to the specific circumstances of the patient.
  • Carry out prevention, support and follow-up actions.
    Anticipate possible risk situations in the home to avoid issues and accidents.
    Anticipate and communicate patients' health problems or changes in their condition, aiding their recovery and progress.
    Where necessary, monitor the patient's medical prescriptions to avoid self-medication and the possible consequences of this.
    Provide assistance with administrative issues and dealings with the health services, where required to do so by the patient.
    Manage the home documentation and maintenance, carrying out the necessary actions in order to ensure proper operation and organization.
  • Coordinate with other professionals.
    Help to provide continued care alongside other professionals from the social or healthcare services.
    Inform the professional social or healthcare team of these demands and needs, in order to improve the care offered to the people being assisted through the home care programmes.
