Description

The tester in the automobile sector carries out visual monitoring of the quality of production, including checking that manufactured products are satisfactory, taking samples of critical components and supervising work areas. He/she also manages quality documentation and records of problems arising.

The tester has to know how to use instruments and machinery for taking measurements (micrometers, calipers, three-dimensional machines, etc.), as well as IT tools for collecting and analysiing data. And needs to know how to interpret verification plans and documentation.

There is a direct connection between the tester and the quality control department, given that the guidelines for quality control are laid down by this department, which has to decide whether the parts inspected are acceptable or not, in the light of the results of the verification.

Tasks

Quality is of great importance in the automobile industry. Currently, many companies work with the aim of achieving zero defects in the manufacturing process. The task of the tester has varied over time, from verification using manual devices on the production line to quality control using computerised electronic systems.Duties include the following:
  • The tester interprets plans and technical requirements for manufacturing components.
  • He/she verifies parts and components, according to instructions from the quality control department.
  • He/she completes the documentation for inspection and quality control of parts.
  • In the event of an irregularity, he/she informs those responsible for production and quality.
  • The tester is also responsible for supervising the calibration of quality control devices.
