Artistic Director

Description

Art directors are a polyhedral professional figure who can work in different areas of creation but have a common denominator: graphically define the artistic image of the project to be developed. These areas can be artistic manifestations (plays, exhibitions or other representations), audiovisual creation (cinema, television or advertising), the publishing world and any multimedia project for digital channels.

When they work as art directors for a theatrical company, they decide the productions (the story to be performed, the cast and the team supervising the play) usually consulting with the production of the play.
In the field of digital realization, these professionals design the aesthetics of production for filmmaking, usually for cinema and television. Their function is to supervise both the filming process and the editing and assembly process in order to ensure aesthetic coherence in line with what the management and production team has defined.

Finally, art directors can also work in the production digital shows, performing audiovisual creation, digital animation and multimedia, and intervening the conception and production of shows applied to artistic manifestations (plays, museum exhibitions or other types of representation).

Tasks

Given the versatility of these professionals and the many professional areas in which they can work, the tasks to be carried out would be:

In the case of a project related to a graphic product:
  • Study the communication objectives that were defined in the project, as well as the profile of the company or the organization commissioning the project.
  • Consider elements to be combined and different ways of graphic resolution regarding styles or trends.
  • Graphically design the project based on one or more creative ideas.
  • Show the distribution of the images, texts and headlines, illustrations, graphic elements, colours, etc.
  • Manage the project's pre-production and production.
  • They oversee managing professionals from other areas (graphic design, photography, illustration, animation, etc.) in order to create the graphic proposal).
  • Supervise the preparation of the final materials for their production: master copies for printing, the final layout of the publication or audiovisual product, or the production of the virtual elements.
  • In charge of the relationship with the client. They have the responsibility, along with the person in charge of the creative direction, to present the project to the client and argue it.
In the case of a project related to an artistic product:
  • Decide the design, including lighting, props, furniture, makeup, hair, etc.
  • Study, analyse, interpret and research the script. Provide an overview of the emotional, historical and psychological profile of the work in order to guide the direction of the overall production.
  • Conduct auditions, select actors and actresses and assign roles and conduct an overall appraisal of the production during the general rehearsals.
  • Coordinate with different professionals. Work with designers to define the stylistic approach for the production, with stage designers to coordinate rehearsal schedules and costume, sound and light rehearsals and with technical directors to ensure the technical requirements of the production are met.
  • Train stage managers so that they can guarantee the smooth running of the production even in the absence of the director.
  • Work with production managers to ensure the production needs are met according to the established budget.
  • Keep in touch with advertising agents in order to design signs and the programmes.
In the case of a project related to an audiovisual or multimedia product:
  • Conceive technical, aesthetic and narrative solutions for the audiovisual or multimedia product according to the requirements of the client or the target audience.
  • Search and obtain documentary and graphic sources that fit the technical and narrative needs.
  • Define the way of working and the standards to follow.
  • Evaluate the solutions presented by the technical management in digital processes and choose the appropriate ones for the audiovisual product in which they are working.
  • Collaborate in preparing the technical script, storyboard and production plan, based on the script¿s specifications.
  • Supervise both the shooting and the editing and post-production of films and control the entire process and the personnel involved in order to ensure good quality.
In the case of digital shows:
  • Design the spectacular effects, coordinate the teams and select the techniques, file formats and computer applications necessary for the elaboration and integration of multimedia production sources, depending on the characteristics of the digital show to perform and production requirements.
  • Integrate in the final assembly process the work of digital composition and visual effects, as well as that of other departments in order to ensure the quality and consistency of the final product.
  • Track the cost of the necessary products and manage the overall art budget of the project.
