Description

The graphic designer of packaging is in charge of designing the graphic image of a product. There are several elements to create the graphic image of a product, from a container's label to the graphic element on a bag or the image of a Tetra Brick package or other type of packaging. Usually, they carry out projects for mass market companies of sectors related to food, perfumery, cosmetics, detergents, etc.; a focus on marketing is very important in their work, since they work with products that are displayed on shelves and which thus require a highly effective design with regard to communication in order to be set apart from the surrounding competition. Based on the communication needs of the product's client, the positioning, the existing competition and market trends, the designer will create and carry out an image that meets all these parameters and that also differentiates and highlights the product on the shelf at the point-of-sale.

Tasks

  • Analyse the design briefing or order that has been commissioned.
    Study the information that has been provided: the type of product and current image (if it has one), the image of the manufacturing company, the usual points-of-sale, the product's competition and the objectives related to communications and image.
    Compile and organise all the information that the packaging must transmit, based on the different levels of importance.
    Analyse and study the physical container (if there is one) and that of the competition.
  • Design several creative ideas.
    Design different graphic preliminary plans for the packaging and all its elements: the placement of the brand and product's name, the distribution of different texts, the form and quality of the medium to be printed, etc.
    Once the idea has been selected, carry out the graphic project, using the definitive elements, and present the material to create the pre-press proofs.
  • Coordinate the different professionals involved in the project.
    Manage and coordinate the possible collaborators in the project in each of the phases in which they are involved in order to control the effective execution of the project based on the approved graphic idea.
    These collaborators can include: photographers, illustrators, graphic pre-production technicians, printing material suppliers, punchers, printers, engravers, etc.
  • Supervise the pre-production and final production of the design.
    Approve the pre-press proofs and review the final graphic printing.
