Life and health sciences: Biotechnology

Biotechnology is key to progressing towards a cost-effective, knowledge-based system. In recent years, it has radically transformed the health industry, although its influence can be seen much further afield, including in the food or energy sectors, as biotechnology is a cross-cutting tool applicable to a wide variety of different sectors. This permeability to other industries is reflected in the biotechnology industry itself: biotechnological developments have resulted in multidisciplinary skills being required within the industry, encompassing fields such as biomedicine, bio-computing, gene and cell therapy, nano-biotechnology and genetic engineering, to name just a few.
