Osteopathic therapist

Description

The osteopath devises, draws up and implements therapeutic activities for curative purposes based on Osteopathy, in order to to achieve improvements in the physical and psychological recovery process of persons expressing particular pathologies. These activities may be specific or complementary and carried out within the framework of a more generic healthcare programme. Osteopathy researches the impact and progress of disease and its improvement through a series of manual treatments. The study of Osteopathy is based on anatomy, physiology, semiotics and traditional medical studies, with the particularity that to treat illness, Osteopathy resorts to manual rather than chemical means.

Tasks

  • Draw up patient case histories or interpret their diagnoses to establish which programme to follow and define the specific focus of therapy sessions.
    Examine the patient and, if qualified as a physician, make a diagnosis of their problems in accordance with the principles of Osteopathy.
    Carry out an in-depth interview with the patient to identify all internal and external factors involved in causing the expressed disorders or pathologies, placing special emphasis on postural behaviour and health.
    Compile and interpret information provided by biological and radiological examinations and other types of paraclinical examinations.
    Carry out manual mobilisation and functional examination tests.
    Palpate tissue micromovements and assess their restrictions.
    If qualified as a physician, evaluate the efficacy of other treatments previously applied on the patient during the treatment of visible dysfunctions or pathologies.
  • Design, either alone or in partnership with other professionals, a personalised course of treatment and therapy suited to the problems or pathology of the patients in order to improve their physical rehabilitation based on the therapeutic potential of Osteopathy.
    Prescribe an osteopathic process according to the technique to be employed.
    Give information on the principles of Osteopathy.
  • Carry out therapy sessions, applying osteopathy work techniques.
    Carry out therapy sessions, applying osteopathy techniques: work on soft tissue and joints, stimulating the physiological systems of the human body and promoting homeostatic self-regulation .
    Employ osteopathy techniques: osteoarticular, functional, cranial, visceral, direct structures and myotensive.
    Provide information on the characteristics of the therapy session and on the functionality of each action performed (palpations).
    Provide guidance to the patient on postural and health habits and prescribe maintenance exercises.
  • Clinically monitor patients' progress.
    Make modifications to the initial treatment schedule according to session results.
  • Look after the tools and instruments used in therapy sessions, as well as the premises, ensuring these are kept in optimal conditions of hygiene and cleanliness.
    Carry out the disinfection and sterilisation activities typically required for the work tools and physical equipment used.
  • Carry out specialisation and advanced training activities on any novelties introduced to the practice of Osteopathy.
