Description

The maritime health expert is the doctor responsible for maritime occupational health, in both the medical care and preventive aspects, and all related activities (medicine for boarding, at the port, for the traveller, telemedicine, emergencies and rescue). Sea workers are exposed to a series of specific risk factors caused by their activity and their social and professional environment. The main goal of the maritime health expert or maritime doctor is to minimise the factors that significantly influence the common disorders and diseases of sea workers and the accident risks inherent to the profession, which are greater than for most jobs on land.

Tasks

  • Perform several preventive maritime medical tasks, including:
    Occupational risk management and prevention (hygiene, safety, ergonomics and psychology in the marine sector).
    Study and assess work-related illnesses in different marine activities (port work, fishing, merchant shipping, underwater activities, cruises).
    Administer vaccinations and medication to travellers.
    Promote health and health education.
    Carry out medical examinations prior to loading and on-shore.
  • Help monitor the hygiene and health conditions of the crew, passengers, boats and cargo.
    Periodically check the on-board first aid supplies.
  • With regards to healthcare/assistance work:
    Provide on-shore healthcare to sea workers and beneficiaries within the country.
    Assist off-shore sea workers both in Spain and abroad using the Spanish medical radio system, as well as health centres abroad and other telemedicine systems that may be introduced in the future.
  • Plan, draw up and give healthcare-related informational and training courses for sea workers.
    Distribute, disseminate and explain the on-board health guide.
  • Analyse and assess the various marine activities.
    Assess the working conditions of the various groups of marine workers and implement appropriate corrective and preventive measures.
    Execute occupational risk prevention plans.
    Evaluating the workloads of port and sea workers.
  • Where necessary, provide assistance to sick or injured passengers who must be evacuated or taken back to land
  • Conduct or collaborate in epidemiological, statistic or other studies related to the health of professional sailors and fishermen.
