In the fishing sector, different capture systems are used depending on the type of species to be caught and the fishing modality used. Fishing gears are extraction techniques or methods of catching fish or shellfish and there is a ride range of types, forms and methods of use depending on the distribution, lifestyle, and movements of the target species.

The most common fishing gears are the trawling, the purse seine fishing, the minor gear nets, as well as the gear and devices to catch shellfish and the hook equipment, used both in sport and professional fishing. In all cases, these gear and devices allow the capture of species that are not very accessible to industrial gear, facilitating the capture of species of great commercial value.

These professionals are in charge of controlling the process of making and assembling the fishing gear, the different configurations, tools, and construction materials, as well as repairs and maintenance, following the indications of the plans and/or traditional procedures.
This professional activity is found in the fishing sector, especially in fishing boats and in aquaculture activities that require the services of manufacturing fishing gear and equipment.

• Know in depth the different pieces that make up the gear and equipment, allowing them to interpret the information on the plans for the construction of the materials with which they are made.
• Ensure the good conservation of gear and devices when they are not at sea, identifying the harmful agents and/or elements that can damage them and taking the necessary measures for their correct subsequent treatment.
• Supervise the maintenance after the use of minor gear, handles and other equipment and devices so that they are in optimal performance conditions after use and avoid deterioration.
• Identify the gear repairs to be performed, counting the number of damaged meshes and their characteristics and meaning. Select the appropriate threads, cables or wires for the reconstruction or other elements necessary for the restoration of the damaged parts.
• Evaluate the condition of the deck of the boat where the minor gear, handles and shellfishing equipment are located so that the loosening and tuning manoeuvres can be successfully carried out. Also review the deck equipment (pulls, sharpeners, floats, blocks, mechanical and hydraulic systems of the dredgers, among others) to check their condition and operation, as well as the protective equipment for the prevention of occupational hazards.
• Check the materials, elements, tools, and utensils necessary for the preparation and assembly of the gear and equipment used in the different fishing modalities, according to the indications and specifications of the plans.
