Description

The main function of this professional is to inspect ships to monitor compliance with safety and quality plans and hence they analyse new regulations and their implementation in quality systems. They also conduct inspections and audits on board vessels. Inspectors may work for the government, in which case they report to the Sub-Directorate General of Safety, Pollution and Maritime Inspection, for shipping insurers or for ship owners.

Tasks

The duties of a maritime safety and quality inspector are as follows:
  • Conduct inspections and audits on board vessels to assess, monitor and report on their condition and that of the products they carry.
  • Inspect the equipment for new and existing ships to ensure compliance with standards and specifications. These inspections consist of surveying the structure, machinery and equipment (navigation, safety, radio, etc.) and the general condition of the vessel. They also include checking materials on board.
  • Being part of the shipping companyŋs inspection team responsible for compliance with safety and quality plans such as Tanker Management and Self Assessment (TMSA), both on board ships and in offices.
  • Analyse new regulations and their implementation in the quality system.
  • Conduct surveys of the useful life of the vessel (new construction, annual survey, intermediate survey, special survey) to ensure that standards are observed.
  • Conduct inspections required by domestic statutes and the international conventions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
  • Observe machinery and equipment emergency and safety testing and operation.
  • Measure the weight of vessels and properly stow cargo.
  • Investigate marine accidents.
