Description

The main function of this professional is to command vessels engaged in traffic in ports, rivers, estuaries or bays, with no weight limit when they are not self-propelled and up to 50 tons when self-propelled (i.e., those with an engine), provided that their engine does not have more than 150 hp of effective power (the function of these vessels is usually to guide ships to moorings and then help them with tying up or until they leave port). These professionals are hired by the Port Authority, which is the Spanish public agency under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport that manages the port.

Tasks

The main duties of a internal port traffic master are as follows:
  • Follow the instructions of port operations and services specialists concerning the arrival and departure of vessels in the port.
  • Command vessels engaged in internal port traffic, that is to say those vessels that travel around the port.
  • Be in charge of the mooring and unmooring of ships arriving in port by guiding them to the moorings.
  • Assist vessels manoeuvring in the port, as each port has its own features, to prevent damage to ships and the portŋs quays during mooring/unmooring.
  • Guide ships to the port entrance in order to regulate traffic and prevent accidents between vessels entering and leaving the port.
