Description

The engineer responsible for the maintenance, refurbishment and repair of recreational boats is the person who plans the work to be carried out and supervises its execution. The tasks to be carried out by the technical staff are set out in blueprints and work plans.

The engineer has a solid training and professional qualification, which includes a degree in naval engineering, which can be obtained at the School of Nautical Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. This is an extensive basic technological training that provides the specific knowledge needed to professionally assume the tasks of a naval engineer, as well as the flexibility required by the many professional tasks involved in the repair and maintenance of recreational boats. The engineer develops the technological activities related to the field of naval engineering in ships and boats of all types, floating and fixed platforms and other devices (floating docks, structures for the use of marine resources, platforms for the generation of renewable energy, marine nurseries and fishing systems) and in general, in any maritime industry. More specifically, the engineer is the professional responsible for the drafting of the basic project for the repair, refurbishment and maintenance of the recreational boat on which, later, other professionals with a technical profile will work in the execution of the operations.

It should be noted that the Catalan, Spanish and European labour markets currently offer few opportunities for the construction of boats, an activity that traditionally took place in shipyards. For structural reasons, the construction of vessels especially large ships has moved to Southeast Asia, which means that the main job opportunities for engineers are in the maintenance and repair of vessels of all kinds. Usually, the engineer develops his/her professional activity in the ship construction, repair and maintenance industries, naval engineering consulting companies, maritime administrations, shipping companies, classification societies and quality certification bodies.
