Description

Prototyping engineers are responsible for drawing up technical designs and overseeing the construction of moulds for the manufacture of individual prototypes and pre-series prior to the definitive manufacture of units, in order to perform functionality and durability tests... which will subsequently be approved and produced.

They also oversee the prototype production and quality control processes. One of the prototyping techniques that is gaining more presence in the industry is 3D printing.

Tasks

The tasks carried out by the prototyping engineer are as follows:
  • Revise and supervise 2D and 3D models carried out by the delineation team. For this task the CAD/CAM CATIA V.5 tool is used.
  • Calulate the structure of the prototype piece.
  • Adjust the geometry of the model or mould of the model based on the prototype plans.
  • Design moulds for the production of a series of prototypes, if these are manufactured.
  • Supervise the technical production side of moulds and prototypes.
  • Act as interlocutor with the client in technical issues.
  • Control quality in the prototype series produced.
  • Present proposed techniques to clients, p. eg., on new projects.
