Measurement technician

Description

Metrologists are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of measurements taken during tests, where the results are used as evidence for certification. Metrologists have to determine what measurement should be taken and monitored, and the measuring and follow-up devices required in order to provide evidence that the product meets set standards. Metrologists must establish the processes ensuring that follow-ups and measurement can be implemented, and that this is done so in a way that complies with the measurement and follow-up requirements. The substantial overlap between a metrologist's duties and quality control tasks explains why measurement processes are of key importance in order to determine whether products meet required quality standards. Metrologists should have a command of the various control and measurement devices, as well as a thorough knowledge of different quality control standards. Since metrological control is one of the components of a quality standards system, metrologists must work in close collaboration with the quality department.

Tasks

The metrologist's duties include the following:
  • Measurements using three-dimensional machines.
  • Participation in the interpretation of plans.
  • The measurement, control and dimensional analysis of components and assemblies, both new and modified.
  • Calibrating measuring devices.
  • Participation in the drafting of documents to apply for certification.
  • Checking and monitoring the condition of tools.
  • Ensuring that measuring instruments are maintained and ready for use.
  • Participation in product audits.
