Welding Expert.

Description

The welding technician is an expert in techniques and applications of this technology. There are two large groups of welding techniques: autogenous and electric. The first uses the flame produced as a heating source by the combination of oxygen and acetylene or butane gas, while the second is produced by an electric arc between the electrode and the part to be welded. Depending on the inert gas and the electrode used, there are several types of electric welding (MIG, MAG, TIG, ...).

Electric welding is a very common production process in machining companies without scrap extraction, assembly of metal structures, automotive, machinery manufacturing... Most companies use electric welding for maintenance work. Electric welding equipment ranges from manual to robotic, depending on operations to be performed. In many manufactures (mainly in the car industry) the welding process is automated, basically by means of CNC robots (robotic welding). In this case the welding process is completely automated, both in the welding operation and piece holding. This type of welding is usually used to perform point and arc welding techniques, where it is applied on a large scale. Furthermore, autogenous welding is mainly used in boiler making, shipbuilding and metal cutting (oxy-cutting) operations.

This professional generally depends on the workshop manager, plant manager or production manager.

Tasks

Welding is generally used in many industries and all sizes companies. Therefore, tasks to be performed can vary substantially depending on the kind of company. Some of the tasks performed by the welding technician are:
  • Sets the technique to be applied in each welding operation. Supervises welding operations.
  • Supervises welding facilities and machinery.
  • Program automated and robotic welding equipment.
  • Controls the quality of the weld by non-destructive testing techniques.
  • Collaborates with job risk prevention technicians in choosing collective and individual security teams (EPIs) and diseases and injuries job prevention.
