Operations planning could be defined as the administration of the resources needed to generate products and services efficiently, precisely and reliably, with the aim of assuring that demand requirements are met with quality. However, in order to achieve this external quality, industries have to apply quality methods internally, as well as designing the comprehensive process. This involves greater coordination between tasks involving materials procurement, production and distribution. In this context, directors of operations planning are responsible for managing and coordinating this comprehensive process, introducing technical and organisational improvements to achieve maximum competitive advantages and decrease costs. Directors of operations planning normally coordinate a team that is made up of technicians, operators and administrative staff, working jointly with the production department.


  • Establish which products and materials need to be handled using the Just In Time technique (a manufacturing method which makes use of the minimum materials necessary to achieve a smooth operation), in partnership with direct managers, and calculates ideal stock levels:
    Monitor the progress and development of the logistics plan and establish the relationships between the logistics policy and customer service objectives.
    Analyse security stock standards.
    Analyse transportation requirements and conditions of service.
    Assess strategic planning costs and review planning methods and procedures.
    Study the relevant plans and operations with the operational managers in charge.
  • Adjust said planning according to effective sales.
    Plan long-term operations using a Master Plan.
    Convert the Master Plan into manufacturing and supply orders and decide when and where these orders are produced.
    Initiate planning procedures and aim for profitability on a global scale.
    Plan operations according to demand.
  • Work in partnership with the Operations Manager to enforce the logistics policy defined for the company, appoint and allocate the necessary human and material resources.
    Define the new system versions, improvements, methods and resources required to achieve the integration of all material and finished product flow related activities.
    Monitor the use of IT in logistics operations.
    Review total costs and study the relevant budgetary implications.
    Introduce planning and control methods and techniques according to current times.
    Monitor and apply quality, industrial and environmental safety improvement plans and analyse the results obtained.
    Manages and optimises the performance of staff under his/her supervision, ensuring that they undertake tasks with the maximum care.
