Description

Materials engineers are responsible for the selection and development of materials for use in industrial processes, considering their mechanical, electronic, thermal and optical behaviour, their structure and procurement, according to demands and the way in which they are to be used, with particular emphasis on the cost and properties of respective materials. One part of the process involves constant research of new materials, developing and applying them for industrial processes.

Tasks

The tasks carried out by the materials engineer are as follows:
  • Define the requirements of suitable materials to the use that is derived from them.
  • Search for and select materials and make a prior assessment as to the qualities considering the cost.
  • When the materials available on the market do not answer to requirements set by the system, take charge of the design of the specific materials. In this point it is important to consider aspects such as the duration of material, manufacturing costs, coatings and the surface quality. In addition, tests for the laboratory must be considered.
  • Produce reports on the definition of the materials that will be applied to the system and its characteristics. In addition, manage presentations to structure technicians, emphasising the material effects on the work environment conditions, especially when additions or variations are introduced into pre-defined system specifications.
  • Define the characterisation tests of designed materials and review the corresponding ones that already exist. These tests serve to verify and measure the properties that identify the material.
  • Establish inspection criteria of the new materials designed.
