Product development engineer

Description

Product engineers are responsible for managing the various phases in the development of the product, from the original idea to its launch (design, prototyping, trials, approvals, etc.). They are also involved in monitoring the manufacture, production, quality control and assembly processes, in order to optimise the launch of new or modified products. Product engineers contribute to defining and creating assembly and machining lines, in order to implement new products in factory, producing the documentation required to monitor the processes and assembly during the implementation of a project. Product engineers must have an excellent command of product planning and development techniques, as well as of tools used in the automotive industry (FMEA, PPAP, etc.). Additionally, they should be aware of manufacturing techniques (moulds, dies, machining, surface treatments, etc.) as well as related materials and components (plastics, PCBs, etc.). Where technology is concerned, they must have a command of 2D and 3D design tools (CATIA, Pro ENGINEER, CAD, etc.). In the automotive industry, product engineers work as part of multidisciplinary teams, adjusting products according to the demands of the market.

Tasks

Duties include the following:
  • Participation in product design, material selection and testing.
  • Participation in the preparation of project documentation, defining the process and working system.
  • Coordinating the development and industrialisation of new products or modifications to existing products.
  • Monitoring production.
  • Supervising product quality in each of the stages of industrialisation.
  • Evaluating and participating in monitoring of suppliers.
