Description

Industrial design is a branch of design aimed at the intellectual, technical and creative conceptualization of products that will be manufactured through techniques of mass production. Industrial design projects usually respond to the needs of creating or redesigning a product.

Their work may focus on any industrial sector with different production technologies, whether it is for long or short production series projects.

The main specializations include:

  • Vehicle design of products related to the transport of people or goods. The designer will have to go in depth in constructive systems, materials, ergonomics and comfort, aerodynamism and environment and sustainability, among others.
  • Packaging design. They will design and create a packaging based on industrial needs, specific objectives of presence at the point of sale and demands of logistics, communication and positioning.
  • Products design in general, which can meet a variety of needs: redesigning an existing product, creating a new product, expanding the product range, reducing production costs or improving functions.

Tasks

  • Analysis of the project, company and market.
    The designer analyses the briefing or document which specifies the goals and requirements of the design, the positioning not only of the product and customer, but also user and the most direct competition.
    In this part of the process, the designer can conduct studies regarding trends, technologies, usability, sustainability and environment, ergonomics, etc., in conjunction with the company or external consultants.
  • Project definition and development of the first hypotheses.
    The designer suggests different creative ideas with various views of the product, selects and shows different materials and finishes, and prepares the first technical concepts if required. The materials they use for the presentation should allow the definition of the creative ideas, such as illustrations, 3D renders and dimensioned drawings with general measurements.
  • Design project development.
    Once the way in which the work will be carried out is defined, they create all the technical specifications for the correct productions of each of the components, introduce possible adjustments and carry out the technical project.
    In this part of the process, the material that is usually delivered are detailed and overall drawings, a constructive technical report and models if necessary.
  • Monitoring of the project industrialisation.
    They manage the production of prototypes and pre-production, verifying that the different components can be assembled correctly. They monitor industrialization, manage and make possible changes that may occur.
