Description
Interior spaces designers are in charge of thinking about the final disposition of the interior of built spaces and ensuring their correct execution. They may work both in the construction of new works and in the rehabilitation or renovation operations of buildings, and both in spaces intended for housing and spaces intended for jobs, or in any other type of use (for example, a hotel or a teaching centre). Therefore, interior spaces designers may participate both in the design stage or definition of any work and in the execution stage of this work.
Thus, these professionals are the one in charge of devising and developing the space. Therefore, they require a comprehensive knowledge of the project and the relationships that are expected to exist among the people who will carry out some activity there, always looking for the comfort and usability of the interior space.
Interior spaces designers may develop some specializations to address some segments of the job market in a more specifically way, such as furniture and lighting in domestic environments, production (for example, in offices or industrial production plants) or in interiors for collective use. Another specialization may be to ensure the image and decoration of a specific business or commercial group (for example, a hotel group or a franchise company), being in charge of communicating the concept and the brand, the business image and transmitting it through the design and the decoration of the interior architecture with the appropriate furniture, the suitable colours and materials, the correct lighting, thus prioritizing the transmission of a certain identity.
Tasks
- Analyse the project, its objectives, and the market.
These professionals must have special knowledge of the objective of the construction, reform, or rehabilitation project in which they intervene: the final use, construction, or comfort characteristics, among others. Therefore, at the moment of starting the project, the interior designer, together with the development company and the external consultancies, can carry out studies prior to the draft in order to create an environment of more innovation, studies of trends, technologies, usability, ergonomics, lighting, usage habits, etc. - Design a proposal or draw up the first hypotheses.
Propose a creative idea for the space being designed and present some elements to help the client to understand it. The draft design should be very clear on the layout of the spatial distribution of the different uses, the structure, and materials to be used, the atmosphere that will be created and the furniture and lighting that will be used.
Present some technical details to show the technical news or the constructive viability, as well as plans with general dimensions in order to give a better explanation of the draft. This can be achieved using 3D rendering, 3D animation, virtual tours, technical drawings, material samples or models in order to achieve a clear understanding of the project. Moreover, select and propose materials and finishes. - Design the technical project.
Once the draft has been approved, complete the project through the exhaustive definition of all the elements and details in order to develop it industrially and constructively, for example, the specific design of a particular piece of furniture, the definition of the lighting and all the decorative elements. - Coordinate and manage the production of the project.
Depending on the business structure in which they work, they may be responsible for coordinating other collaborators, either from their own team or external ones, who deal with other aspects of the space such as communication and graphic design, where applicable. Manage the final production of the space with all the external industrial suppliers, control the quality, budgets and the final execution and construction.
