Description

The objective of structural safety is to eliminate or minimise the risks that originate or affect the foundation, supports, beams or any structural element of a building in order to ensure that it does not collapse. It is a transdisciplinary area, since the structural safety is approached from the perspective of the building, fires, materials, etc. The structural safety technician applies the regulations and technical specifications that are established with regard to structural safety. This technician works for engineering companies as well as architecture firms.

Tasks

  • Define the structure of a building and carry out the calculations to ensure its safety. The regulations that refer to structural safety, like the Building Standards Law, indicate that it is one of the basic requirements with regard to building safety. The structure must fulfil certain minimum criteria established by the regulations that seek to ensure the safety of buildings. Therefore, the specialist applies the structural safety regulations to the building's plans. The application of harmonised technical standards like the Eurocodes is particularly noteworthy among these regulations, due to its complexity.
  • Verify the application of the structural safety regulations. Once the construction has been completed, the Building Standards Law sets forth the need to verify, among others parameters, that the structure is correct and that it complies with the safety standards. For this reason, the specialist conducts an analysis of the structure and makes sure that it complies with the regulations.
  • Assess the existing structures in order to ensure that they have no problems and that they comply with the regulations.
