Description

Industrial or white biotechnology is that applied to industrial processes. Its main purpose is to create easily degradable products that consume less energy and generate less waste during production. One of the products obtained through these processes is biofuel, fuel of biological origin obtained through a renewable process based on organic waste. Some examples of biofuels designed for the automotive industry are biodiesel, obtained from vegetable oils or animal fats, and bioethanol, from organic matter such as sugar cane, yucca, corn or beet. Another type of biofuel is biogas, obtained from the decomposition of organic matter and the action of microorganisms in anaerobic conditions. The specialist in biofuels concentrates on the search for alternative energy sources, and develops and improves existing biofuels to generalize their use.

Tasks

  • Develop new biofuels and follow-up the evolution of existing ones.
  • Research in the field of new biofuels based on bioprocesses.
  • Develop industrial procedures to combine biofuels.
  • Identify and recommend appropriate biofuels to suit different uses and applications.
  • Provide information on the characteristics, properties and performance of biofuels.
  • Be informed about the development of new biofuels.
  • Publish research results in specialised journals and/or scientific congresses.
  • Form part of a multidisciplinary team, together with engineers, chemists and environmental scientists.
