Description

A systems engineer is responsible for devising and integrating complete space instrumentation systems, including sensors, measurement and testing equipment, which can vary enormously depending on the objectives of a mission and the functions of a satellite. This professional is responsible for the technical development of a product and ensures that products match the initial design brief. In order to perform this task, in line with the functions and performance laid out by the client, it is vital to ensure that the interaction between the equipment's various subsystems and the whole is effective, technically speaking.

Tasks

  • Create the conceptual design of the system: break it down into different subsystems and assign the various functions these must carry out.
  • Identify and define the interfaces that must be established between the different subsystems that comprise the set.
  • Define the back-up and recovery systems, which are very important in the system's design and are activated in the event that the main system shuts down. The first begins operating immediately, replacing the main system, while the second activates the main system when it is operational again.
  • Manage the regulations that will govern the system's design and construction.
  • Verify the design tests and check that the final result operates correctly.
  • Taking into account the client's specifications, approve the system's design before presenting it. For this task, analyse the client's specifications. This professional is the project's technical manager. Therefore, each of the members of the work team will submit their designs for his/her approval.
  • Advise the production departments on the construction of the system. In order to ensure that the design meets the client's expectations, the systems engineer must maintain frequent and direct communication with the project director.
