Description

Within an aquaculture facility, these professionals are in charge of carrying out tasks related with the proper development of animal and vegetal farms (fish, molluscs and/or crustaceans, seaweeds) and manage their planning, production, collection and commercialization. They also plan, organise and oversee facilities, machinery, finances and staff. In short, these professionals coordinate farm resources in order to achieve the required quality of the product and comply with Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety standards.
Aquaculture facilities may take place in saltwater (marine) or freshwater (continental) and in open or enclosed systems.

They may deal with the whole cycle, from reproduction, monitoring young fish, fattening and finishing, or may be specialised in a part of the process.

Tasks

The responsible for aquaculture operations carry out the following tasks:
  • Plan the production schedule in line with the demand and the characteristics of the seaweed's production cycle and the climate, in the case of open-air facilities.
  • Monitor and/or modify the environmental conditions (temperature, oxygenation, salinity, etc.) of the aquaculture facility in order to adapt them to the needs of the stocks' productive cycle at all times.
  • Check for pathogens, identify them and apply the relevant treatments in order to eradicate them.
  • Carry out the necessary transfers of stock within the facility and classify the different stages of the productive cycle (size, weight, duration) to standardise quality.
  • Administer and oversee a suitable feeding schedule and implement it for each product and in each phase of the growth cycle.
  • Monitor, implement and/or coordinate the necessary tasks for proper maintenance of the facilities and keep the emissions from the farm within the limits of the current environmental regulations.
  • Deal with the collection of the final product. They may be in charge of a permanent workforce but may also have to occasionally manage temporary workers.
  • Draw up the daily work schedules and activities and ensure they are complied with. Design and plan the training of farm personnel.
  • Oversee inventories of the farm.
  • Oversee financial management and set the farm budget.
  • Contract the necessary services for the farming (hiring machinery, purchasing young fish, feed, animal health products, veterinary care, production insurance, etc.) and oversee their general maintenance.
  • Manage the sale of the collected product and ensure that the final product complies with the relevant quality standards.
  • Research and develop new production methods and new varieties.
