Radio frequency technician

Description

Design and optimise the mobile communications network, adding new functions that improve its performance and provide added value, as well as expanding the current networks to provide more coverage for mobile phones. They physically travel to the different locations where the base stations must be installed in order to take measurements for the design and check the network.

Tasks

  • Design the mobile communications networks. This is the person responsible, together with the locations manager, for establishing the suitable physical locations (must be electrically equipped) to install the equipment and radio antennas. They also propose network improvements and optimisation (carrying out the frequency plans).
  • Carry out visual prospecting. Determine the buildings and landscape elements that could interfere in the radio communication and seek alternative solutions.
  • Follow-up on the installation of the equipment, antennas and base stations.
  • Oversee the technological evolution of the mobile communications system. Every time the technology changes, modifications must be made to the installations, both hardware and software. Evolving from GSM to GPRS was simpler since it required modifications in the switching exchanges. The transition to 3G mobile phones with the application of UMTS technology involves changes in the base stations, related to both antennas and equipment.
  • Adapt the design according to market needs. As the system experiences continuous growth (15% rise in traffic), it must support more capacity.
  • Oversee the integration into the radio systems network and new functions.
  • Follow-up on the network's state, detecting the drops based on the indicators of the radio network provided by the switching exchange.
