Special education specialist

Description

Special education includes all actions intended to meet the needs of intellectual giftedness or mental, physical or sensory disabilities in either ordinary or specialise schools. Within this special education, these professionals design innovative learning programmes and projects to help students obtain academic success and plan the actions and resources needed to carry them out. Interact with the students in need of this special support and their families and support and participate in learning support programmes and special education research.

Tasks

  • Interact with the assigned child or their family or legal guardians and with the other professionals in the intervention or education team.
  • Identify the psychological characteristics of the child and requests for information/training presented by the families or legal guardians, and communicate and interact effectively, empathetically, kindly and respectfully with the child to perform the educational and care interventions contained in teaching or planning unit activities.
  • Plan and evaluate education and special care processes for children who require them, i.e., establish the intervention programme and get information from the child and their environment in order to draw up the intervention programme and prepare, lead and assess activities geared towards cooperation with families.
  • Support activities designed to develop the child's independence and attend to basic needs including overseeing activity facilities and materials according to law.
  • Act in conflict situations in the development of independence and attend to the child's basic needs, following any guidance received from competent professionals.
  • Draw up, develop and assess teaching materials and activity areas for formal and informal education plans according to the established programme.
  • Design activities geared towards cooperation with families or legal guardians, meeting basic needs, creating habits and developing the capacity for independence and the cognitive, motor and socio-affective skills of children with special education needs.
  • Perform special education activities based on the established programme and attend to children individually and in groups to develop their abilities.
